Entrevista especial: Paul Hoen, diretor de CR2 e Jonas LA!

Oi galera! Hoje é a grande estréia de Camp Rock 2 no Brasil! E nós tivemos a oportunidade incrível de entrevistar o diretor do filme, Paul Hoen.

Você & Sua carreira

1. Olá Paul, boa tarde, você fez um ótimo trabalho tanto em Jonas LA quanto em Camp Rock 2. Por quanto tempo você tem sido diretor?

Bem, eu tenho dirigido desde a faculdade, mas eu marco o ponto quando eu entrei para o Directors Guild of America como o inicio oficial da minha carreira como um diretor. Isso foi em 1987 para uma série do Disney Channel chamada Videopolis Startracks.

2. Isso sempre foi um sonho seu? Como você entrou em contato com a profissão pela primeira vez?

Eu comecei pensando que seria um “major” no teatro. Eu nunca me imaginei em frente às câmeras, mas eu amo trabalhar nos bastidores das produções. Eu estudei primeiro Design de Produção, mas quando eu fiz uma aula de Produção de TV com alguns dos meus amigos, eu realmente me apaixonei por esse mundo. Era como teatro, mas com toda uma camada adicional.

3. Como você entrou no “mundo de Hollywood”?

Depois que eu saí da escola, eu tinha amigos que estavam em classes à frente a minha. Eu os observei e eles me ajudaram a arrumar trabalho. Fazendo café, pegando o almoço das pessoas, copiando scripts. Eu via a minha carreira como uma escada, e se eu pudesse ver o degrau seguinte, não importa o menor passo que eu desse, eu sabia que poderia chegar lá.

4.Você fez parte de vários filmes e series de TV. Qual projeto você acha que curtiu mais? E qual foi o mais difícil?

Cada projeto é desafiador por razões diferentes. Obviamente uma grande produção como Camp Rock 2 – O Jam Final tem grandes desafios de produção, tipo o ônibus. Mas uma comédia de pequeno elenco é bem difícil também, porque você tem que fazer ficar interessante sem muitas ferramentas de ostentação. São apenas os atores, o palco e a história.

5. Qual foi o momento mais desafiador da sua carreira até agora?

Eu acho que a coisa mais difícil é trabalhar com as pessoas, atores, equipe e estúdio. As pessoas têm ótimas idéias, e algumas não tão boas. Para mim, a meta é juntar todo mundo, em uma unidade de objetivos e visão. Eu acho isso tão importante mesmo se você tiver lidando com o chefe do estúdio, um ator, ou com as pessoas da produção decidindo sobre qual roupa um personagem deve usar.

6. Nós somos do Brasil.Você já pensou que seria conhecido em outros países?

Eu não. Como eu disse, a fama e o estrelato não eram algo que eu sempre desejei. Eu apenas amo ser criativo, eu amo assistir e guiar as outras pessoas a serem criativas. Isso para mim é muito satisfatório e recompensador o suficiente.

7. Você tem algum conselho para adolescentes que sonham em ser diretores/atores/músicos?

Se isso é algo que te inspira a se tornar uma pessoa completa, lute por isso. Apenas se lembre que é uma estrada longa, sucesso rápido não é usual. Você muitas vezes não será recompensado como você espera, baseado no seu talento e trabalho duro. Mas se você não levar isso para o seu coração, e continuar seu trabalho, se esforçando para ter prazer nele, você terá êxito.

8. Você foi indicado para alguns prêmios no Directors Guild of America e ganhou um por Outstanding Directorial Achievement em programas infantis pelo filme Jump In! em 2008 e outro por Cheetah Girls: One World em 2009. Como você se sente sempre que recebe algo assim?

Para mim, ganhar o prêmio do DGA foi inesperado e incrivelmente emocionante. Era uma coisa que parecia distante para mim, e é algo que eu tenho muito orgulho. Infelizmente eu não pude estar lá para receber o prêmio, já que estava quilômetros longe na Índia. Então espero ter essa chance novamente e estar na cidade para recebê-lo.

9. Você tem trabalhado com a Disney por um tempo. Você já se sente em casa? Como é essa parceria?

Eu senti e me sinto bem orgulhoso em como esse canal cresceu e o pequeno papel que eu tive nisso. Eles me nutriram e desafiaram durante todo o caminho, e me proporcionaram uma vida feliz e estável, e um ramo de trabalho instável. Eu também tenho dois filhos e eu amo assistir eles assistindo os projetos no qual eu trabalho. É como meu próprio local de teste, eles me fazem um diretor melhor.

10. Quem te inspirou mais no inicio da sua carreira?

Eu acho que quando entrei no ensino médio eu estava um pouco perdido. Eu tive professores que perceberam que eu era um pouco original, mas me fizeram perceber que eu tinha alguns dons únicos, e por isso eu sou eternamente grato.

11. Qual o próximo trabalho para você?

Bom, tem algo pela frente… Eu estou trabalhando num piloto musical para o Disney Channel – nesse ponto ainda está bem abstrato, mas fiquem ligados.

12. Eu ouvi dizer que a audiência em Jonas LA está ótima. Como foi trabalhar nessa temporada? O que você acha que mudou mais desde a primeira, já que você trabalhou em alguns episódios?

Essa temporada foi mais “Out & About” (algo como, mais na rua, mais passeando assim). Eu acho que a série basicamente está mais localizada para os meninos. Não me entenda mal, eu acho que eles fizeram um ótimo trabalho na primeira temporada, mas essa segunda temporada coloca os Jonas Brothers num local que eles já estão mais acostumados. Também tem um pouco mais de drama, o que faz a série mais estimulante para assistir.

13. A primeira temporada de JONAS foi filmada num estúdio interior. Como foi a transição para sets a céu aberto? Isso fez da série melhor?

Sim, certamente.

14. Antes de filmar Jonas LA, você filmou Camp Rock 2 apenas alguns meses antes. Isso ajudou na gravação da série, considerando que você e os JB tinham trabalhado juntos apenas um pouco antes?

Eu me tornei um grande fã dos Jonas Brothers. Eu amo trabalhar com eles, ver eles crescendo como atores, e vendo eles se tornarem bons homens jovens. Isso para mim é bem impressionante, quando você considera o quanto eles são famosos.

15. Tanto Jonas LA quanto Camp Rock 2 tem novos personagens. Ter novos rostos fez dessa série e desse filme mais empolgantes?

Tinha muito para gostar do primeiro filme. Eu acho que todos nós demos um olhar duro nisso e como nós poderíamos melhorar e crescer um pouquinho. E nós fizemos isso em todas as áreas incluindo a produção. Mas o crescimento real que eu acho que você irá ver é no nível de atuação da Demi e dos meninos. Todos realmente vieram para dar o seu melhor.

16. Camp Rock 2 e Jonas LA são seus trabalhos mais recentes lançados. Como tem sido a resposta até agora?

Até agora muito boa. Agora eu só tenho esperança que as pessoas assistam.

17. Você filmou Camp Rock 2 no último Setembro no Canadá, que é um lugar bem frio. Como foi essa experiência, considerando que todos vocês estavam filmando um filme sobre um acampamento de verão?

No primeiro filme não teve muitas filmagens de noite. Na verdade, algumas cenas foram filmadas do dia pra noite, e eu achei que elas ficaram horríveis. Eu estava determinado em não deixar isso acontecer nesse filme. Eu acho que uma grande parte da aventura de um acampamento é sair de noite. Infelizmente, foi um dos verões mais frios no Canadá, então teve chuva, neve e vento. Acrescentado a isso, as meninas vestidas em vestidos. Foi bem desafiador, mas felizmente todos encararam o desafio. Uma coisa que eu aprendi, é garantir que todos estejam se divertindo. Se você está se divertindo, você pode passar por qualquer coisa.

18. Algum momento engraçado de bastidores no set de CR2 e/ou Jonas LA?

Nós ríamos quase todo dia. Por alguma razão estranha, Nick estava constantemente sendo impulsionado a cair na água congelante. Ele sempre levou na brincadeira e riu disso. Por exemplo, quando uma canoa ficou longe dele e o derrubou, eu disse a ele, “oh, essas canoas são um desastre completamente instável.” E ele sorriu de volta para mim todo molhado. “Sim Paul, é culpa das canoas, eu não tive nada a ver com isso.”

19. Camp Rock 2 teve alguns momentos engraçados como Introducing Me, Kevin com os Junior Rocerks. Eu ouvi que o elenco teve que filmar uma cena 45 vezes porque vocês todos não conseguiam parar de rir. Na sua opinião, qual a cena mais engraçada nesse filme?

Bem, eu adoro quando Kevin (Jason) interpreta uma cena completa com Nick (Nate) totalmente ensopado, e não reconhece esse fato. Sempre me faz rir.

20. Os Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato e o elenco Camp Rock estão em turnê agora promovendo o filme. Você foi a algum desses shows, se sim, o que você achou?

Eu não fui ainda! Eu vou quando eles vierem para Los Angeles.

21. Qual sua cena favorita em Jonas LA?

Para mim os episódios, é um laço entre Wassabi Story e Flirt Locker.

22. E em Camp Rock 2?

Eu adoro os números musicais. Eu adoro ver como todos eles saíram. Todos são um pouco diferentes, mas eu acho que meu favorito é “Wouldn’t Change A Thing.”

23. Os dois projetos lançaram suas trilhas sonoras em Julho e esse último mês. Você ajudou em algo com a música?

Sim, nós testamos várias músicas diferentes, e uma consideração cuidadosa foi feita entre as quais colocamos no filme.

24. Qual sua opinião sobre as músicas dos dois projetos?

Eu adoro os dois. É ótimo sentar e ouvir a elas nos CD além do que elas são em números musicais.

25. Você acha que esses dois projetos vão atingir novos públicos?

Eu espero. Mas tudo que podemos fazer é trabalhar duro e fazer o que parecer certo para nós como pessoas criativas. Você só espera que atinja o acorde certo em outra pessoa.

26. Nos diga como Kevin, Joe, Nick e Frankie são como atores e como eles são nos bastidores.

Nós rimos, Frankie está apenas no começo, mas ele vai ser uma força um dia. Ele tem a mesma ética de trabalho e é um cavalheiro como seus irmãos mais velhos. Kevin eu acho que um dia será um diretor, ele é muito atento e preparado para dar boas sugestões, Nick é um ator controlado e é extremamente inteligente, eu estou constantemente espantado pelo seu talento e perspicácia, e seu seco senso de humor. Joe é uma comédia e um poço de energia no palco. Eu acho que sua voz como cantor está ficando cada vez mais forte.

27. E as garotas, Nicole, Chelsea e Abby?

Eu poderia falar e falar sobre como todas elas são legais e talentosas. O fato que nós tivemos uma agenda bem desafiadora e fomos capazes de conseguir coisas tão boas, é uma prova do seu poder como atrizes, sempre estando preparadas. Todas as três são tremendas.

28. Você planeja vir aqui ao Brasil um dia, dirigindo um filme ou apenas passeando?

Eu adoraria ir ao Brasil. Você tem um trabalho aí pra mim?!?!

29. Você tem algumas mensagem a todos seus fãs brasileiras? E pro meu blog?

Hey guys! Today is the big premier of Camp Rock 2 in Brazil! And we had the amazing opportunity to interview Paul Hoen, the director of the movie!

You & Your career

1. Hey Paul, good afternoon, you did a great job both in Jonas LA and in Camp Rock 2. For how long have you been directing now?

Well I’ve been directing since I was in college, but I mark the point when I entered the Directors Guild of America as the official start of my career as a director. That was in 1987 for a Disney Channel show called VIDEOPOLIS STARTRACKS.

2. Has it always been a dream for you? How did you get in contact with directing for the first time?

I started out thinking I would be a theatre major. I never imagined myself in front of the camera but I love working backstage on productions. I first studied Production Design, but when I took a class in Television Production with some of my friends, I really feel in love with that world. It was like the theater but with a whole additional layer.

3. How did you join the “Hollywood” world?

After I got out of school I had friends who were in grades ahead of me. I looked them up and they helped me to find work. Making coffee, getting people lunch, copying scripts. I saw my career as a ladder and if I could see the next rung, no matter how little a step, I knew I could get there.

4. You were a part of several movies and TV shows. Which project do you think you enjoyed the most? And which one was the hardest?

Each project is challenging for different reasons. Obviously a big production like CAMP ROCK 2 – The Final Jam has huge production challenges. Like the bus. But a small cast comedy is super hard too, because you have to make it interesting without a lot of showy ornaments. It’s just the actors, the stage, and the story.

5. What was the most challenging moment of your career so far?

I think the hardest thing is just working with people, actors, crew, the studio. People have great ideas and some not so great. For me the goal is to bring everyone together in a unity of purpose and vision. I think that is so important whether you’re dealing with the head of the studio, an actor, or the prop person deciding on what watch a character should wear.

6. We are from Brazil. Did you ever thought you would be known in other countries?

I didn’t. Like I said, fame or stardom wasn’t ever something I wished for. I just love being creative, I love watching and guiding other people to be creative. That for me is so satisfying and reward enough.

7. Do you have any advice for teenagers who dream about being a director/actor/musician?

If it is something that inspires you to be a complete person you should go for it. Just remember that it is a long road, quick success is not usual. You will often not be rewarded, as you might expect, based on your talent or hard work. But if you don’t take it to heart, and continuing working, and striving for delight in your job you will succeed.

8. You were nominated for some awards in the Directors Guild of America and won one of them for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Children's Programs for Jump In! in 2008 and another for Cheetah Girls in 2009. How do you feel whenever you receive something like that?

For me winning the DGA award was unexpected and incredibly emotional. It was a mile stone for me and something I am incredibly proud of. Unfortunately I couldn’t be there to accept as I was miles away in India. So hopefully I’ll get the chance again and be in town to receive it.

9. You’ve been working with Disney for a while. Does it already feel like home? How is that partnership?

I have been and I feel very proud of how that channel has grown and the small part that I’ve played in that. They have nurtured and challenged me all along the way, and have afforded me a fortunate and stable life, in an unstable business. I also have two children and I love watching them watch projects that I work on. It’s like my own testing ground they make me a better director.

10. Who inspired you the most at the beginning of your career?

I think when I entered High School I was a bit lost. I had teachers that realized I was a bit unconventional but made me realize that I had some unique gifts for that I am eternally grateful.

11. What's next for you now?

Well there is something next... I am working on a musical pilot for the Disney Channel -- at this point it is hush hush, but stay tuned.

Jonas LA & Camp Rock 2

12. I heard the views on Jonas LA are doing great. How was working on that season? What do you think is the most different thing about the first one, since you worked in some episodes of the first season?

This season were out and about more. I think the show is ultimately more sited for the boys. Don’t get me wrong I think the first season they did a great job, but this second season puts the Jonas Brothers in a stage where they are more accustomed. Also there is a bit more drama which makes the show more engaging to watch.

13. The first season of JONAS was filmed in an indoor studio. How was the transition to outdoors sets? Did it make the show better?

Yes certainly.

14. Before shooting Jonas LA, you’ve had filmed Camp Rock 2 just a few months before. Did it helped on the shooting of the TV show, considering you and JB had worked together just a while before?

I have become a really big fan of the Jonas Brothers. I love working with them, watching them grow as actors, seeing them turn into fine young men. That to me is really astounding when you consider how famous they are.

15. Both Jonas LA and Camp Rock 2 have new characters. Have meeting new faces made this season and this movie more exciting?

There was a lot to love about the first movie. I think we all took a hard look at it and how we could improve it and grow it a bit. We did that in all areas including the production. But the real growth I think you will see is in the level of acting from Demi and the Boys. Everyone really came out to play their best game.

16. Camp Rock 2 and Jonas LA are your most recent works released. How’s the response going so far?

So far, so good. Now I just have to hope people watch.

17. You’ve filmed Camp Rock 2 back in September, in Canada, where is a really cold place. How was that experience, considering you all were shooting a movie about a summer camp?

The first movie there wasn’t a lot of night shooting. In fact some scenes were shot day for night and I thought they looked horrible. I was determined not to let that happen in this movie. I think a big part of the adventure of camp is being out at night. Unfortunately it was one of the coldest summers in Toronto so there was rain, snow, and ice. Add to that, kids in summer dresses. It was quite challenging but thankfully everyone rose to the challenge. The one thing I learned is to make sure everyone is having fun. If you are having fun you can get through anything.

18. Any funny backstage moment on the set of CR2 and/or Jonas LA?

We laughed almost every day. For some odd reason Nick was constantly being push of falling into ice cold water. He was always a great sport and was able to laugh about it. For example when a canoe got away from him and dumped him, I said to him, “oh those canoes are a disaster completely unstable.” And he smiled back at me soaking wet. “Yeah Paul, it’s the canoes fault. I had nothing to do with it.”

19. Camp Rock 2 has some funny moments like Introducing Me, Kevin with the Junior Rockers. I heard the cast had to film a scene like 45 times because you all couldn’t stop laughing. What’s in your opinion the funniest scene in this movie?

Well I love when Kevin (Jason) plays a whole scene with Nick (Nate) dripping wet, and neither acknowledges this fact. It always makes me laugh.

20. The Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato and Camp Rock Cast are on tour right now promoting the movie. Did you go to one of those concerts? If so, what did you think?

I haven’t seen it yet! I’m going when they come to LA.

21. What’s your favorite scene in Jonas LA?

For me episode wise it is a tie between, Wassabi Story, and Flirt Locker.

22. And in Camp Rock 2?

I love the musical numbers. I love seeing how they all turned out. They are all a bit different but I think my favorite is “Wouldn’t Change A Thing.”

23. Both projects released its soundtracks in July and this last month. Did you helped in anything about the music?

Yes we auditioned many different songs and careful consideration was placed into which songs we put into the movie.

24. What’s your opinion about the music of both projects?

I love both of them. It is great to sit down and listen to them as albums beyond what they are as musical numbers

25. Do you think these two projects will reach new audiences?

I hope. But all we can do is work hard and do what feels right for us as creative people. You just hope it strikes the right chord in someone else.

26. Tell us how Kevin, Joe, Nick and Frankie are as actors and how they are on the backstage.

We laugh, Frankie is just beginning but he is going to be a force someday, he has the same work ethic and is a gentleman like his older brothers. Kevin I think one day willl be a director he is very observant and ready with great suggestions, Nick is a controlled actor and extremely smart I’m constantly amazed by his talent and insight, and his dry sense of humor. Joe is such a comedy and such a powerhouse on stage. I think his singing voice is just getting stronger and stronger.

27. And the girls, Nicole, Chelsea and Abby?

I could go on and on about how nice and talented they all our. The fact that we had such a challenging schedule and were able to achieve such great things is a testiment to their power as actors, and always being prepared. All three are tremendous.

28. Do you plan to come here in Brazil someday, either directing a movie or just sightseeing?

I would love to come to Brazil! Do you have a job for me there?!?!

29. Do you have a message for all the Brazilian fans? And for my blog?
